What is a better digital camera to go with, Canon or Nikon?

Is Nikon or Cannon better? Why do people buy SLR and Nikon cameras when they can buy 8-10MP Sony Cybershots which also take video?
Im just wondering, I dont know the differences between why people go with SLR over point and shoot sony cybershot type cameras with 8MP or more.

I am very into photography and I want to buy one of those professional cameras. Which Nikon or Canon camera is good for people who want to take landscape pictures? Please, I want a camera that is cheap (affordable), great quality of pictures, looks great for landscape. Thank you
