Understanding Shutter Delay in Digital Cameras

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

When using a digital camera to take action photos you will notice that there is a delay between the time you press the shutter button to the time the camera actually takes the photo. In most cases this delay is small enough and not noticeable but when taking action photos, when trying to capture an event that just happened or when trying to capture a moving object this delay can result in a photo that just missed the action. In this article you will better understand what causes the shutter delay and how you can overcome it.

A shutter delay is defined as the time gap between pressing the shutter button to the camera actually capturing the photo. There is no shutter delay in film cameras as in these cameras the shutter button is virtually connected to the shutter itself and holding down the button results in the camera taking a photo immediately. In digital cameras the shutter button is connected to a built-in micro computer and holding down the shutter button initiates a series of events that result in capturing a photo.

When you press the shutter button the camera goes through a series of setup events in order to get all its electronics ready. Only when these events are finished can the camera capture the photo. The time it takes for the camera to complete these events can vary but is usually around one second or so. When taking subsequent photos there is an addition delay as a result of the camera compressing the photo and writing it to the slow flash memory.

Although a circa one second delay does not seem long it can make the difference between capturing an action photo to missing it. Some cameras will also initiate a focus process when the shutter button is held down and will only take the photo when the focus is completed. This can add even more delay.

Although it is impossible to remove the shutter delay in your camera there are few practices that can help avoiding its results. For example many cameras include a burst mode. In burst mode the camera shoots a fast series of photos for as long as the shutter button is held down or until the camera’s memory is full. In this mode the camera writes the photos to a temporary memory which is very fast but small. When the shutter button is released or the memory is full the camera starts the slow process of writing the photos to the flash memory.

Using the burst mode you can shoot fast photos of an action event and then choose the one that best captured the events. The speed and the amount of photos that the burst mode supports vary between cameras. Some high end cameras can take as much as ten photos over the course of one second.

Another delay that is a result of the digital camera technology is the Initial Delay. Most cameras will enter into a standby mode if not used for a certain amount of time. This time can vary but it’s usually in the few minutes range. When the camera goes into standby mode it turns off most of its electronics in order to save power. Usually pressing the shutter button will restart the camera but such a restart process is long and can take a few seconds. The result is a longer delay when taking a photo after the camera was idle for some time. In order to avoid this you would have to make sure that your camera is turned on and does not go into standby mode when taking action photos. Some cameras allow you to disable the automatic standby feature through a menu option. If your camera does not allow that you can keep it on by pressing the shutter button half way down every now and then. The downside of leaving the camera on all the time is wasting battery power. In order to maximize battery life in such scenarios you can disable the camera’s LCD screen which consumes a lot of energy and use the view finder instead.

Another way to minimize the shutter delay is to avoid the automatic focus process which usually starts when the shutter button is held down. One way to do that is to hold the shutter button half way down. In most cameras the result will be a one time focus process and then a focus lock. The camera will stay in focus and when the shutter is fully pressed it will take a photo without re-focusing. Another option is to put the camera in manual focus.

It takes practice to get to know your camera and to get a feeling of the delays it introduces. Although there is no way to completely get rid of the delays you can master overcoming them by practicing taking action photos. New high end professional cameras have a very short delay and as the electronics improve cameras will eliminate the shutter delay altogether.

Commercial Photographer – Know What it Takes to Click

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

Photography is one of the most mentally stimulating creative art forms that wields the ability to bring life to inanimate things like images. Fed with valuable potions of visualisation and conceptualisation, even dull elements like photographs can relay messages that cannot be put across by human voices. Fragmenting into varied categories like wildlife photography, fashion photography, advertising photography and commercial photography, this industry has always extracted the highest of awe and admiration from the beholders throughout the world.

However, pleasant and interesting as it may seem from the external platform, the world of photography includes several complexities when it comes to aspiring to be the wielder of a camera. It is quite evident that the present world has taken on a very commercial shape as the buzz is constantly about marketing and promoting newer and better products everyday. Viewing this nature as a possible getaway for some professional flight, many people aspire to become a commercial photographer these days.

To become a commercial photographer, aspirants need to understand that there are some skill based parameters that they have to be compatible with. Its not just handling the apparatus properly that makes a good photographer, rather the knowledge of the application of light, the appropriate angle and other factors that determine success. In the case of commercial photography, the photographers have to understand the essence of the event and portray the commercial aspects in a creative outflow.

Recent trends showcase that the typical commercial photographer is a person who is well aware of the psyche of the new age human population and can deliver what they seek. With various occasions as release parties of some book or record, corporate dos, premier shows and so on happening every other day, the photographers have a busy schedule in hand as they capture valuable pictures for newspapers, magazines and even the online media.

Take Care not to Accidently Trash Your Treasured Photos - Part 1

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

(c) 2008 Tom Jackson

Part two of this article will follow and will contain steps 4-6.

Take time to prepare your camera for an important event, such as a wedding, or you may end up without any photos of the occasion. I have seen it happen all too often, even with professional photographers, who fail to take some important basic precautions to ensure a successful shoot. I know many professional photographers who began their careers photographing weddings. It is probably the easiest of all photography areas to get into.

A most important thing to do, does not even involve equipment. Time. If you are going to photograph an important event, you need to be sure that you allocate enough time to make sure that you have everything planned ahead. And that often means starting the process a day or two beforehand. Doing this, will make for a much more relaxed process as you take photos on the day, and a more relaxed attitude will usually mean more creativity and better photos.

Are you used to taking photos with a traditional camera and film? It can be very surprising to you when you realize how easily you can lose a whole memory card full of images due to a simple error. With a film camera, it does not matter if the battery gives out right at the time you take a photo. The only problem that might occur, is that you lose that one shot. You just rewind the film, and you are good to go. Digital is wonderful. But like anything, if you are not careful, it will come back and bite you.

Do I really need to plan? Yes! Lets take a deeper look to see how easy it really is to lose all your photos. Each of the points I cover here carry the same weight as the other. In other words, do all of the following to make sure that you have a successful day, taking wonderful photos for you and the subjects.

1. Be sure all your batteries are fully charged. If you camera does not use standard batteries like AA or AAA then you need to make sure the battery is fully charged because you will not be able to buy and then charge a new battery any time soon. If you will be taking a lot of photos on the day, then it would be wise to make sure that you have a fully charged back up battery available. A lot of the smaller compact cameras, and even the larger DSLRs, often take special built batteries. They can be quite expensive, but if you think you might be taking a large number of photos, then it will be to your benefit to purchase an extra battery. It will always come in handy in the future, so it will never be a waste of your money.

2. You need to have several memory cards with you to make sure you can cover all the photos people request during an event. Many smaller compact digital cameras can only take smaller capacity memory cards. So, if you are planning on taking photos for a special days event, then it would be wise to make sure that you have at least one or two spare memory cards. Also, be aware, that if your camera can take the larger capacity memory cards, and you think you can take all the photos on just one large card, you also need to consider that if you have problems with that card, you will lose all the images from the day. A good photographer will always have a back up for everything, a spare camera body, spare lenses, a spare flash and of course, several spare memory cards which you can use during the day, shooting some images on each card so you can never lose all images from an event shot on the one card. Some of the larger capacity cards available these days, can store hundreds and even thousands of images before you need to change to a new card. I can only imagine the pain of losing a card with hundreds of irreplaceable images.

3. Before starting the days event, make sure that you format the memory cards and get them prepared before you use them. Be sure to format the card in the camera you will be using for the days event. Industry experts all agree that the best way to format and prepare a memory card, is to do it in the camera you will be using. Do not format the card using your computer. By using the camera, it ensures that you have maximum compatibility. And if there is going to be a problem with the card, this is most often the time where the problem will show up. If the card does not format properly in the camera, then do not use that card during the event, but try and rectify the problem when you return home. If a card exhibits any sign of a problem, do not use it and do not spend time trying to fix it in the field, just use your back up card. It is just not worth the effort. You can try all kinds of things once you get home and have the time to spend and diagnose the problem.

A Black-And-White Truth

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

Who says beauty is absent in the absence of hues and colors?

In black-and-white photography, this is rarely the case.

Despite the boom of color photography in advertising and in almost all forms of media, many photographers and photo enthusiasts remain loyal to the beauty of subjects in grayscale.

THE BEAUTY OF GRAYSCALE

In reality, black-and-white (b&w) photography didn’t lose its glory despite the dominance of color photography. Why? because its foundation leads back to great symbolic values in people’s culture like birth, wedding, death and other solemn events where the basic white and black are present. And in between, unlimited shades of gray continue to define the other realities.

Over the years, the certain abstract quality of b&w prints never fades to appeal to the senses of imagination and intellectual standpoint. The absence of hues and other shades of color let people unlock the mystery and appreciate the innate beauty in an ordinary scene.

Its “simplicity” also forces the audience to see things in a different light and urges them to concentrate on other aspects of the photo like composition, lighting, and the like.

A DOSE OF HISTORY

In the beginning, everything was black-and-white.

Before color photography invaded national magazines and newspapers, black-and-white photography dominated mainstream media. Being more convenient to use and produces better results compared early color film processing, b&w was safer to use. But with the resurgence of color photography—with the help of modern technology—more and more people craved for colored photos, making the photographers shoot almost everything in color.

B&w kept plummeting with the presence of film manufacturers who offered better color film and processing at lower prices. As a result, less and less b&w films were available in the market, making it more expensive and hard to find. This shift eventually led to the abrupt dropping of creating b&w images in the last the last 50 years.

BREATHING NEW LIFE

Most amateur photographers are being lured to colored photography because of its almost limitless possibilities. But as they become seasoned lens men, they go back to black-and-white photography because of its beauty and mystery.

Being part of the power of photography, a new life has been breathed into b&w today. Back in print advertising, b&w continues reinvent because it can now be manipulated digitally. In fact, more and more Internet sites create series designed to introduce the new generation of photographers to the possibilities of b&w photographs. These sites tell how great b&w photography is as a photographic medium as it reintroduces the photographers to the concepts of shadow, highlights detail, film, image contrast, exposure, and tonal range.

Tips in getting black & white photos:

1. Decide what to shoot in b&w that would emphasize the beauty of the subject.

2. Start learning how to convert color into gray tones.

3. Test your contrast and key skills by balancing major shade components.

4. Identify textures, lines, and shapes that would standout despite the absence of color.

5. Set the mood of your photograph by manipulating the lighting used.

6. If you’re a neophyte, take digital photos.

7. Try to test your skills using a black & white film to improve depth and character of the subject.

8. Look for local photofinishers that can print your photo in b&w photo papers.

World Renowned Artist Lazlo Tihany Invites Viewers Along His Artistic Adventure

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

Where in the world does a young artist from Hungary go for inspiration? First he explores Italy, France and Germany, three countries whose art histories are among Europe’s most influential – from the Renaissance to Impressionism. Then this young artist crosses the Atlantic into America. From the East Coast to the West Coast he continues his exploration, putting down roots only when he arrives in Arizona, He is struck by the desert’s uncorrupted innocence – an innocence that informs his paintings, metal art sculptures, and photography for the next 30 years.

At least that’s how contemporary artist Laszlo Tihany found his inspiration, and it has served his art well. After moving to Arizona in 1978, Laszlo won several first place awards for his photography.  Soon after his metal art began to incorporate southwestern themes, especially the metal sculptures that soon found their way into nearly a dozen art galleries, from Santa Fe to San Francisco.

Yet as celebrated as his work was becoming, Laszlo chose to further his art education by taking classes in sculpture, photography and painting. This dedication to furthering himself as an artist, combined with his impressive body of work, earned him the attention of his local PBS station. In 1990, Laszlo presented his work on Tucson PBS-TV, an event that brought his art, and his story, to the local community.

Four years later, Laszlo co-founded Picci Designs with Arizona painter Linda Colino whose own paintings have earned her critical acclaim. Theirs is a partnership that continues to this day, blending contemporary, impressionistic and primitive styles. Picci Designs is a contemporary art studio built on an artistic philosophy that Laszlo and Linda call “strength in simplicity of design” – qualities you can see in their captivatingly whimsical metal sculptures, paintings, photography, tribal masks, clocks and mirrors.

Today Laszlo most enjoys experimenting with abstract metal art forms that he describes as having a playful, spatial flow and release, and rotational symmetry. “I want to give more than a colorful experience,” he says. “I want to intertwine my imagination with the viewer’s.” Laszlo certainly accomplishes that with his provocative metal sculptures that leave plenty of room for the viewer’s own interpretation. So the artistic journey Laszlo Tihany embarked on alone more than three decades ago is now one that he walks hand-in-hand with those for whom his art is an adventure all its own.

A History of Panoramas

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

Early panoramic images were the work of artists and painters who sought to capture nature scenes and architecture in a wide angle view. Historic events were also a popular subject of panoramic drawings and paintings. Though many panoramic images could be found in a flat plane format, some artists, seeking to push the boundaries of the genre created works of enormous size.

Dating back to the late seventeen hundreds one of the first uses of a cylindrical format was developed by artist Robert Barker. The Irish artist painted striking panoramas of the Scottish city of Edinburgh. With its beautiful architecture dating back to medieval times, Barker presented the world with what he called Panorama. His use of a cylindrical viewing surface was a first, giving the viewer a feeling of being part of the scene. These images are still considered a truly amazing visual achievement for the time.

Other artists soon began to copy the style of Barker in their own work. Trying to outdo one another, the size and scale of the panoramas grew. Viewed from inside the cylinder, the images could reach heights of over forty feet. Even more impressive was the overall size of the cylinders which be as larges as fifty feet in diameter.

Modern versions of the cylinder panorama can be seen in IMAX theaters presentations. These presentations provide the viewer with a perspective that is very similar to the work of Barker. Viewers are made to feel as though they are part of the imagery.

The advent of photography changed the way panoramic images were produced and viewed. Early photography was indeed faster than painting but was still a laborious task. Hours may have been spent capturing an image on a photographic plate only to have the image not be properly fixed or otherwise unusable. In spite of these difficulties, early photographers of the early nineteenth century were undaunted and managed to produce images of striking clarity and visual acuity.

As the process of photography improved, becoming more reliable and predictable, creating panoramas began to shift from paintings and drawings to wide view angle photography. The truly unique works of art that were early panoramas became photo collages. Photographic panoramas are produced by pasting together multiple photographs to form a single image that reflects a very wide viewing angle.

By pushing the limits of equipment, lighting, film quality and processing, photographers have discovered new and exciting ways to create photographic images. The advent of digital photography has raised picture taking to an entirely new level. Digital technology has made the creation of panoramic images much easier.

Even the invention of the airplane provided photographers with opportunities to give us images that were impossible to capture before the invention of powered flight.

The introduction of digital photographic technology has advanced the science and art of building spectacular panoramic images. This advance is a fully integrated approach to creating panoramas that utilizes hardware and sophisticated software tools. Digital cameras have reached the stage to where image resolution can meet or exceed that of film photography.

The ability to manipulate digital images by using the latest in software tools makes the process of blending and stitching individual images faster and more precise. Digital images are a compilation of tiny images called pixels.

Each pixel represents a fraction of the total image. Stitching individual photographs together can be done pixel by pixel, producing an almost flawless image. Effects can be added to enhance the image along with adjusting color intensity and contrasts. The result is a panoramic image that has less visual distortion.

Shopping for panoramas and photoramic prints is easier than ever since the advent of online shopping. Consumers can find panoramic prints depicting an almost endless variety of subject.

Commercial Photographer – Get Clicked by Fame

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

Photography is one of the most creatively stimulating fragments of the arts that can equally enrapture the beholders of photographs as well as reap rich benefits for the photographers. As the current world has already set its course towards an untamed commercialisation of almost everything, photography has taken the aid of the advertising industry to do its bit for the incredibly eventful journey. This trend has inadvertently given rise to a highly successful genre in the form of commercial photography, which has influenced many to make their foray into this category.

The advertising industry of the present day world is by no means restricted to a single platform to spread its wings across the world. Besides the primordial platform of the print media, other platforms emerged in due course of time in the form of television and the presently flourishing Internet world. This implied the surfacing of bigger opportunities for people who desired to apply their skills to the optimum in a bid to metamorphose into commercial photographers.

There are, however some pretty vital factors that go in the making of a commercial photographer. There’s no denying the fact that there are some prerequisites when it comes to the decision of a person to jump into a creative profession like photography. A natural affinity or flair towards the art and adequate knowledge of the application of elements like the light and angular projection are very necessary for the delivery of quality work.

If you have all these necessary abilities and are desirous of making a big splash as a commercial photographer, then the doors of fame and riches await you to work your magic for all to behold. The most advisable step towards that goal is the creation of a portfolio that can act as a testimony to your photography skills and book a space for you in the hallowed walls of the photography industry.

Is It Time YOU Thought About How You Can Make Money Taking Pictures?

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

If you and your camera are inseparable - if your images are really good - if YOU are the one always pressed into service when the need for pictures arises (and you love doing this) you have probably already asked yourself if you could make money taking pictures.

The answer is YES, you can!

How? Develop a plan - determine a course of action - and do it!

All the time that you have spent over the years, taking pictures for everyone -free - can now be viewed as an investment. Others know your work. You have experience! This is good. Friends can be your best advertisers. They can also be your customers. They have all - at one time or another - paid to have their picture taken. You, too, have probably paid to have your picture taken. Now YOU can meet their needs.

Let others know what you are doing Having a small amount of business cards printed works well. They are inexpensive and very effective to hand out; letting others know that you are working into photography for hire now. Hand these out to ALL your friends - “accidentally” hand them more than one - remember they have contacts in many areas that can be pointed back to YOU!

List the types of photography you have done - FREE - within the last two years. They likely include: family reunions

pictures at graduations

families

weddings

Photographers CHARGE for shooting:

family reunions

pictures at graduations

families

weddings

And people are happy to pay. They want pictures! Someone is making money taking pictures - for people that YOU know. Why not YOU?

Look through some of your pictures

Compare these with ones you have seen done by a local photographer for hire. Are yours as good? Can you make as good? Can you make them better? Are you willing to put forth the effort to make them great? - Everyone loves GREAT photos -

Starting to make money taking pictures is EASIER than you think. You already have a good camera - you know how to use it - and you love using it. Now you need to gain experience shooting as a pro:

YOU controlling the shots, in order to make it a great photograph.

YOU selecting the background - the lighting - the poses - the arrangements!

YOU having a theme in mind for a photo session.

These aspects of photography - and more - are within your grasp. How? Just keep doing what you have been doing -shooting for family and friends- but now with a definite purpose in mind.

The next time you are at a get-together - shoot like you would if you were charging for the event. Download these photos and look at them through the eyes of a customer. Would you be willing to pay for these pictures? You are now your own teacher. Get input from others - especially from ones that were there. Listening to their comments is like hearing what a customer thinks.

This is a great learning tool! You can gain experience doing what you love doing, with a new view - taking pictures of willing subjects (because they know you, and you know how to make them look good) and developing you own style of photography.

These are but a couple of ways that you can begin to make money taking pictures.

Photography Tips by Geoff Lawrence

Here are some must read tips before joining any photography contests. These guidelines were proven useful by professional photographers during their amateur years. When joining photography contests, stick to these 10 basic rules of rules in photo shooting.

1. Selection - Select only the best of your pictures to show to others and leave the rest in the drawer. Showing someone every picture you have taken dilutes the effect of the best pictures and gets very boring. You may want to show twenty pictures of little Johnny at the park because they are all quite good and you can’t decide which are the best but, trust me, you will be better off making that decision and showing only the few good ones.

2. Turn the Camera on it’s Side - At first it feels awkward holding the camera on it’s side, but it is worth getting used to. If the shape of your subject, a person or a building, fits into an upright rectangle, you waste so much picture space if you shoot in landscape. You paid for all those millions of pixels, don’t waste them.

3. Framing - One of the easiest ways to improve your photography is with careful attention to framing. Look into the corners of the viewfinder to see what is there. Do you need all that background? Can you get closer to your subject or zoom in?

4. Direction of Lighting - Photography is all about light, the direction of the light falling on your subject is most important, you must look at your subject carefully and see how the shadows fall.

If you are able to choose the time of day to shoot your pictures, try to pick a time when the sun is low in the sky, either shoot in the early morning or late afternoon. Shooting pictures of people with the sun too high in the sky, tends to mean the subject’s eyes will be in shadow and/or your subject will be squinting in the strong light, both of which tend to look horrible. A nice side effect of shooting in the early morning or late afternoon is that the colour of the light is ‘warmer’, reds and yellows are stronger which generally gives a more pleasing effect.

If you are photographing in sunlight, try to position yourself so that the sun hits your subject from the side, this will give you nice ‘modelling’ and help create a 3D effect in the picture.

Sunlight behind the subject can give a very pleasing ‘backlight’ effect but be careful that you are not getting ‘flare’ in the lens, which degrades the contrast of the image.

5. Direction of Lighting (2) - The very worst kind of lighting is provided by the little flash fitted into all modern cameras. Not only does it give your subjects the dreaded red eyes, but also flattens all faces into shadowless featureless blobs. Use the in camera flashlight only in an emergency, when there is no other choice.

6. In Camera Flash - When you have to use the in camera flash, keep your subject(s) away from walls, especially light coloured ones, if at all possible, and avoid that ugly black shadow which looks like an outline. This will not show up against a dark background.

7. Exposure - Using auto exposure to your advantage.

If you have a modern camera, the chances are that the default metering system is ‘centre weighted average’, which means that, although it takes an average reading of the whole scene, it takes more notice of what is in the middle of the frame. Which is good news for us. The other good news is that it takes this reading at the time when you take ‘first pressure’ on the button to take your picture. When you push it halfway down and it beeps at you, not only is the focus now set (on an auto focus camera) but the exposure reading is taken and the aperture and shutter speed are set. So, if your main point of interest is not in the centre of the frame, it’s a good idea to put it there temporarily while you focus and take your light reading, then move the camera whilst still holding the button halfway down and compose the picture the way you want it to be. A common use for this technique is when you are taking a close up shot of two people and there is space between their heads, if you’re not careful the camera will focus on the wall or trees behind them. If the background is very dark or very light this can alter the exposure significantly and result in faces that are too dark or too light.

8. Shutter Speeds - When the shutter speed is important as with moving objects, it’s a good idea to set the camera to ‘Shutter Speed Priority’ mode. This is where you select the shutter speed and the camera selects the appropriate aperture according to the light reading.

9. Apertures - If depth of field is important to either make sure everything is in focus or to throw some things out of focus, select the ‘Aperture Priority’ mode on your camera. In this mode you select the aperture and the camera selects the shutter speed according to the available light.

10. Neutral Density Filters - If you are shooting in bright light and want to restrict the depth of field, use a neutral density filter in front of the lens to reduce the light entering the lens. These are available in different densities, 2x, 4x, 8x etc. each one cutting the light in half, quarter, eighth etc. In extreme circumstances you can ***** a couple of them together. Although they are ‘neutral density’ filters and should not effect the colour balance, if you use two or more together you might need a little colour correction at the printing stage.

If you’re really planning big with your photography career, joining photo competitions is the fastest and easiest way to be recognized. Try putting your heart in every shot and try your very best in every photo competition you join. Some people join photo competition for the price, some for experience and some just do it because the of the fun that it brings. No matter what your reason is, have fun in every click of the camera.

Why You Should Get Your Portrait Now

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

“Are you one of those many people who adore Mona Lisa? If yes, be “in the same position” as her (you can even be as famous as her). Why not practice your personal version of “the mysterious smile” in your OWN Portrait. Yes, you read it right. If you still don’t have your own Portrait, get one now. Getting Portraits hung in homes and office is short to becoming the latest obsession of people at present.

Getting your Portrait doesn’t necessarily mean that you are extremely vain and that you adore yourself too much. Rather, getting a Portrait is a very interesting mean to introduce yourself to the people around you. Portraits, although motionless, can display the most complex of your likeness, personality, aura, and even that very basic mood you always possess.

You don’t have to worry about what kind/variation of pose or style will perfectly fit your ****** features. Most photography and Portrait studios help you with this. You are even luckier if you are in Albuquerque, NM. Any Photography studio in Albuquerque and Portrait studio in Albuquerque will guide you in your mission to have your much-deserved Portrait. The quality of their Portraits is also unquestionable. Photography in Albuquerque and/or Portraits in Albuquerque are top-class, elegant and of high quality. If you’re not in NM and you want the services offered by Portrait photography Albuquerque studios, why not actually visit the place? After all, your travel expense will be “completely” paid by the satisfaction you can get from their services – I can assure you that.

The most FAQ when getting PortraitsI am sure that I have convinced you to get your own Portrait (since you have reached this part). The question that is probably bugging your head right now is what kind of Portrait should you get.

A Portrait can be in a form of a painting, photograph, sculpture, or any other artistic representation as long as your face (and your expression/mood choice) is predominant. You can get a painting Portrait if: 1) You really want to “pay” for your Portrait and 2) you want that classic European Renaissance feel in it. Getting a sculpture Portrait, on the other hand is more expensive. But if you really want your Portrait to stand the test of time and be really elegant, why not try getting this.

The most popular (and advisable) way of getting a Portrait nowadays is through photography. Head shots can look as classic as painting Portraits, yet they are really much more affordable.

Portraits can also feature lots of people. This is applicable with family portraits or special portraits for certain events, such as graduations or weddings.

Having Portraits now doesn’t necessarily mean that you are “preparing” for your death (sarcasm intended). Get your Portrait ready now and share it to your friends. Convince them to have theirs ready too.”

Considerations When Choosing an Aerial Photographic Supplier – Deadlines to Meet?

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

When sourcing a supplier for your aerial photographic needs you must ensure that you make your deadlines clear to the company. If an aerial photographic company has a large amount of work to complete and knows that it will be unable to provide the necessary service then they should advise you that they will be unlikely to meet the deadline.

One of the largest problems in the UK is the weather. The weather will not only affect the operation from an aviation perspective, but also and to a greater extent from a photographic perspective. This is the most likely reason for an aerial photographic company to miss a deadline! Although a supplier can’t change the weather they must be able to react quickly, having full time professional pilots and their own aircraft is one way of achieving this.

The type of aerial photography required will also dictate the level of influence the weather has. For example oblique aerial photography of a large area will require good horizontal visibility, usually above 10 kilometres. However, if it is event aerial photography then the work will normally be completed providing the weather minima is above the pilots and aircrafts flying minima. Often large events will be over several days so the supplier should carefully select the day when the weather is at its best to enable the best event photography to be completed.

When a deadline is close it is of up most important to ensure good communication between the supplier and client. It may be possible for the client to accept photography in not perfect conditions, e.g. with cloud shadow. If this is the case then there will be more chance of the supplier meeting the deadline and more chance of a satisfied customer. Construction photography is one area where this maybe possible. The construction industry often uses progress photography to show a large developments taking shape and therefore the timing tends to be more important than perfect conditions/

Make Money With Your Digital Camera

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

(c) 2008 Tom Jackson

Many professional photographers started their careers by photographing weddings. It can be a lot of fun, and also very rewarding. Established professional weddings photographers can earn six figure incomes every year. And if you really enjoy the photographic process, and are looking for a way to make some money, either full time or part time, than my photography course can help.

Wedding photography can be a very lucrative part time of full time option. In money terms, the market for wedding photography is approx. $5billion. You can make some good money with photography if you want. $5 Billion per year. That’s a sizable market. A good DSLR, a good flash and a couple of good lenses will enable you to begin a career in photography, But most important is your enjoyment in taking photos. The course I have designed is what I call a Studio in a Box, and includes everything you need to start you own photography business including all the business forms you will need. You can see more information and order at www.howtoshootweddings.net.

One of the first questions I am asked when shooting with a digital camera (after the “which camera do you use, question), is, what format should I shoot? Tiff, High Res JPEG, RAW etc. And the answer is very simple. RAW! There is NO other option. And you need to make sure that you are using the highest resolution (megapixels) available on your camera.

You should only be using a digital SLR (DSLR) camera, with the most powerful (expensive) flash available for your system. When you shoot a wedding, you will need to use flash for basically every shot you take. Both indoors and out and even in bright sunlight. Flash is important for lighting subjects indoors but it is also very important outside in bright light as it help to provide even lighting on the subjects.

The bride has usually spent a good deal of money buying her dress and you need to ensure that you get some good photos of the dress. You need to be careful and make sure there is lots of detail in the dress. Digital camera sensors are still unable to record as wide a gamut of light compared with traditional film. Digital cameras have a very narrow capability to record the full range from light to dark. This is where you need to be able to balance the flash with the available light to get acceptable results. Otherwise, you may have some angry people calling you after the event. You cannot afford to mess up a wedding, you only get one shot. So, make sure you do lots of practice before your first real, paying event. A good way to practice is to have you wife/girlfriend/kids dress up in white clothes and take lots of shots and note the settings you need to get detail in the dress, and good skin tones on the brides face.

Whenever possible, set up the kids in the bridal party by themselves. These kinds of photos will sell to the parents, the bride and groom and many other family members, especially the grandparents. Part of your job is to not just take good photos, but to take photos that will sell and keep you in a job and allow you to buy more equipment as you need it. You should always take individual shots of each kid and have the parents help to get them comfortable so you can get some good shots. Always try to choose an interesting background where possible. In order to focus attention on the kids and not the background, I have made a selection around the kids in Adobe Photoshop, and darkened the background a little, so the kids will stand out and be the attention of the photo.

Top 4 Ways to Make Money with Your Digital Camera

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

As a stay at home mom looking for supplemental income, the most important thing we can do is to look for a way to earn money with one of our hobbies or interests.

Making money at home does not have to be direct sales or network marketing. There are infinite possibilities available to make money at home.

One hobby my sister has always loved is photography. Since we were little, she used to pour thorough photo books, and take various pictures of strange objects with her camera. Once digital cameras came on the marketplace, she has had one on her at all times.

But she never really went to any class on learning how to take professional photos. So imagine her happy surprise when she realized how easy it was to earn additional income through her digital photography hobby, despite the fact that she had no formal training!

There are many ways you can earn money with your digital camera at home. Here are a few of my favorites.

1.Selling Stock Photos

There is a huge online market for royalty free stock photos. Simply put, photographers, both professional and new amateurs just coming on the market, take a wide variety of photos on everything. These photos can be of people, places, things, events, you name it.

The photos are then uploaded to one of dozens of profitable stock photo sites where individuals and companies all over the world can purchase the rights to use them for a relatively low price. They then use these photos royalty free on their website, in promotional materials for their companies, and for other uses.

The photographer gets paid for each person who buys their photo. The more photos they take, the more money they make!

2.Photography Field Services

A little known way of making money with your digital camera is by taking pictures for insurance companies and financial institutions.

Whenever a home loan is refinanced, the financial institution will pay a photographer to go out to the property and take a few snapshots of the home for appraisal purposes. The photographer does not interact with the home owners, and is generally paid a very decent fee.

This type of work can also be done for foreclosures, repossessions, insurance claims, and other types of insurance and financial institution needs. The photographer generally needs little to no experience in order to get these types of positions.

The best part about doing these first two types of digital photography work is that you can usually take your children with you! The perfect work at home solution for a mother who has small children at home.

3.Freelance Photography

Once your photography skills improve, you can even branch out into your own freelance photography business. There are many different options for this type of work.

You can take pictures professionally for occasions such as weddings, birthday parties, graduation, and new babies. Or you can even start to take photos to submit to magazines and news publications.

There is a huge, growing market in this field.

4.Mystery Shop Audits

For those who are familiar with secret shopping or mystery shopping, adding in your skills as a digital photographer can come in handy. Many mystery shop companies have auditing assignments available which require a few photos to be taken.

The pay for these shops is generally low, about what a typical mystery shop would pay, but the amount of paperwork to be filled out is usually less, making audits an attractive addition to your mystery shopping skills.

My sister, the family photographer, is currently taking stock photos to list up on one of the major sites. She is excited to be putting her favorite hobby to use, and plans on eventually making this her full-time income.

Great Pictures are a Must at a Wedding

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

Wedding photography is the one discipline in the wedding industry that does not produce a product that you can enjoy on your special day. You bet, now more than ever in the digital information age, freelance and full time career options are endless. Wedding photography is a great place to start your Photography career. Photography is ever evolving; it requires an artistic flair and a vision to take really great pictures. Be sure to ask any questions you have about this important event. Your wedding photography is important to you so don’t hesitate to be clear about what you want.

A wedding photographer is expected to be a master of the craft. When looking for a photographer the best way to make a determination if he/she is good is to observe them in action, try to watch them at a function or event. The hardest part of choosing a wedding photographer is that you sign a contract and agree to pay before you have ever seen the photos. If you are doing an in-person interview, the photographer can show you portfolios of samples of their work. Hiring a professional photographer is the best option because he has the equipment, the experience, and the knowledge in this field. A qualified professional will most likely be using what’s known as a digital single-lens reflex camera, or DSLR, with an average of 8 mega pixels and perhaps even more.

The goal of the wedding photographer is to capture the true you. When we look at photos we think we are seeing the truth as it is taken at that specific time. This isn’t always true as all photos can be cropped.

When many think back on their life, there are certain memories that come to mind. These memories are often important days or moments. Your wedding day memories are very precious and you don’t want them lost by poor photographs. One of the top priorities on a wedding day is to make sure every moment is captured with great photographs and by looking at party favors. These once-in-a-lifetime memories are irreplaceable and making sure these photographs and party favors are properly stored and displayed after the wedding should be just as important.

The wedding goes by so quickly, and before you know it your guests are leaving and think to yourself where did the time go. Then you find that the event is over and what you are left with is all your memories of the day. Once the wedding comes to an end you will receive the proofs from the photographer, this way you can choose the pictures you would like to include in your album. Another good reason to scout out the locations is to check out the lighting situations. Photographic artists who retouch and edit photography are in great demand as are graphic artists who specialize in certain graphic and photographic software.

Hiring professional photographers is usually the preferred way for couples to capture the moments of their wedding forever. If given the opportunity, most couples would prefer to work with a professional wedding photographer. Finding a good photograph is not inexpensive so budget wisely so you are able to get the photographer you want. So choose wisely.

This is not Your Parents Wedding Photographer

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

Wedding Photography

Digital has taken Wedding Photography to a whole new level. No longer does the bride and groom wait for weeks to get their prized memories back for review, they are ready upon their return from the honeymoon … some ready to view during the honeymoon.

Within days of the NUPUALS, the bride and groom can proof their treasured memories in a variety of forms:

On-line: A great venue for sharing the event with family and friends. They can view, select and purchase with a touch of button.

A Viewing Party: At a studio or at home …members of the wedding party can “reunite” to “relive” the memorial event as well as select and purchase. In many instances, they can even request some modifications to the pictures as well as conversion to black/white.

Hard bound album: HIGH quality coffee-table albums in a variety of styles and covers are available today in addition to the standard wedding albums.

Shirts/Cups/Plates: Wedding pictures can be transferred to a variety of media with today’s technology. These make great “thank you” gifts to the wedding party.

Weddings of yesteryear were costly and usually delivered in a envelope, with a few 8 x 10’s and a standard album… but today TOP quality wedding photography is available for every budget and the delivery rivals the most expensive weddings.

With the advances in technology and the versatility of digital photography, treasured memories have stepped out of the envelope and off of the pages of the standard album into a world of endless POSSIBILITES!

Framed Aerial Panoramas

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

Even before the invention of modern photography, artists were creating beautiful panoramic images. The ability to capture an image and chemically fix it to a photographic plate spurred greater innovation and experimentation. Early photographic technology was cumbersome was often unreliable and photographers struggled to consistently capture usable images. A simple exposure of a still life image could take hours.

It was not long before the process of creating photographic panoramas outpaced the traditional images rendered by artists. Before the invention of powered flight, early photographers and artists were largely earth bound. Well, not entirely earth bound but limited to where they could travel by air. If a panoramic artist or photographer wanted to get an overview of a land or cityscape, it usually involved hiking up the nearest hillside or other elevated vantage point.

The seventeen eighties saw the advent of the hot air balloon. Travel by hot air balloon was considered a passing fancy more suited for the wealthy hobbyist than for any practical application. Travel might not be the right word since going aloft in a balloon meant being at the mercy of the prevailing wind. Still, some daredevil artists must surely have taken braved the risk in order to capture a different view of the world.

By the eighteen twenties, fixed plate photography had been introduced. The process of dealing with wet plate cameras involved a very small window of time. Early wet plates needed to be developed and fixed very quickly after exposure. Still, these difficulties did not stop photographers from meeting the challenge of capturing photographic images from the air. All of the equipment would be sent aloft in a hot air balloon, which was very often tethered to the ground.

The earliest successful birds eye images taken from a balloon date back to the eighteen sixties. As the process of picture taking improved so did the ability to achieve powered flight. Lighter than air blimps powered with small internal combustion motors for controlled maneuvers, providing photographers with a more stable platform.

The ability to take aerial photographs was not lost on mapmakers and military planners. The late eighteen nineties saw prolific use of light than air ships but this was about to change with the introduction of powered, heavier than air flight. The airplane gave photographers a freedom of movement that was not possible before. With greater airspeeds than blimps and the ability to land without help ground crews, the airplane quickly became the platform of choice for aerial photography.

Aerial panoramas have quickly become a favorite genre for many people. The ability to capture an image from different altitudes and various perspectives gives the panoramic artist a much larger palette from which to work. Anyone who has watched a televised sporting event is familiar with the blimp shots taken from overhead. Many of these overhead shots are not directed solely at the stadium. Very often, the vantage point allows for spectacular shots of the surrounding cityscape.

These images are the prime ingredient for aerial panoramas. Just as with the creation of any panoramic image, several successive images may need to be blended or stitched together. The same challenges of overcoming visual distortion must be overcome. Advancements in digital photography and image processing make creating unique aerial panoramas easier and more visually pleasing.

Overhead views of their favorite sports stadium or cityscape are very popular. Ironically, even with the availability of fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, the humble blimp is still a popular choice as a photographic platform. Folks looking for high quality aerial panoramas have turned to online shopping as a source with images available from all over the world.

A Picture Perfect Wedding

Published by admin under Special Event Photography

Weddings are definitely one of the happiest moments in a person’s life. But, this momentous occasion does not always come as blissful as the event itself. Days and even months before the big day, couples usually cram up with the littlest details.

The process of listing down and cutting down everything into specific details—the wedding date, the venue, the reception, the caterer, the designer of the gown and suit, all the way down to the wedding coverage—are the areas where stress usually ushers in.

Due to hectic schedules, most couples usually do not pay much attention to one of the crucial things in any wedding—the wedding coverage. Despite the overwhelming tension and excitement, couples do not have to be nonchalant when choosing their wedding photographers if they want their fun times and precious memories recorded very well.

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY PREFERENCES

To avoid making this slight neglect that usually leads disastrous results, couples have to decide first what kind of wedding photography they would want to have.

Most wedding photographers today categorize the types of wedding photography into two: the traditional or classic style and the wedding photojournalistic style.

The most common style used by wedding photographers today, the traditional or classic wedding photography is considered as a “timeless” and the “safest” style because you normally see in countless wedding albums. Characterized by classic poses of subjects aware of the camera, this style involves so much control from the photographer because he is in-charge in arranging individual and group shots before, during, and even after the wedding.

Having excellent portraiture skills, expect the photographer to focus more on the quality of the photograph by making the subject look great from the littlest details. Expect typical wedding photos like pre-ceremony pictures, formal shots of the bride and groom posing with brides maids and ushers, cake cutting, garter and bouquet toss, and the like when you choose a classic wedding photography. This style is ideal if the couple would want to keep portraits of family members for their wedding album.

If the couple is adventurous and unconventional, then you might want to consider the wedding photojournalistic style of photography on your big day. An increasingly popular style today, wedding photojournalism offers fresh and new style of taking photos in the occasion. Characterized by candid shots of the subjects unaware of the moving camera, the photojournalism style lets the attendees act freely to capture their pure and true emotion.

Sourcing style from his experience in journalism, the “photojournalist” pays more attention to minute details and candid shots rather than arranged ones. He’s more into eyeing interesting moments and capturing those in his lens to produce a narrative collection of images that tell a story.

Although some traditional poses will be present, expect photos that show actual emotions of the bride and groom and of other participants throughout the duration of the wedding when you choose the photojournalism style.

In order to avoid ruining the documentation of your wedding, here are some tips in making your wedding a picture perfect one:

1. Weddings are one of the most exciting chapters of one’s life. Make sure that you choose a wedding photographer that can meet all your standards. Meet with the photographer before hand the so you could discuss the details you want.

2. Inform the important participants about the schedule of photo sessions and make sure everyone attends the rehearsal to cut down the stress.

3. Have a reception area so guests can be informed about the itinerary. This will set the occasion in order.
