The best is the Nikon D700 at about $4,000, but since your price range is much lower, I will suggest some cheaper cameras. I would buy a DSLR, they are extremely fast and allow you to easily override auto mode. (I’m in 11th grade and I shoot on a Nikon D200 in mostly manual….my pics simply rise to the top when competing with anyone)
For a camera body, I would suggest the Nikon D80. It’s no where near the build of the D200, but for your price range, it’s 100x better than a point-n-shoot. For a macro lens, I would suggest a non zoom af (auto focus lens). The zoom is a waste when you will be spending a minute composing your shot and can just walk up too it. For your zoom shots, a Nikon 55-200 f4.5 should do. I personally like the 80-200 f2.8 (lets more light in then f4.5) simply because I can use a faster shutter speed, thus stopping action (sports most notably) but again this lens alone is $900.
In fewer words:
- Nikon D80
- fixed lens for macro
- Nikon 55-200 or Nikon 70-300 for zoom
If you want to take good macros then you will need a good macro lens. You could spend your entire budget on a Nikon Macro lens. So as an option to that get the D40 or D60 spend the rest on a decent lens like the 18-200. Then for macro either look for a used macro lens, get some extension tubes or use the macro ***** on filter lenses. Going with a little less on the camera will let you get the accessories you need for what you want to do.
There are 4 cameras wtih lenses from nikon in that range D80, D60, D40x, D40.
The D80 is much more flexible and can use many more nikon and third party lenses than the others models and therefore is the best
As far as a macro lens, I would start with the kit 18-55, add a close-up lens (52 mm filter). If you need better then buy a true macro lens like a 60 mm nikon.
For sports, a good starter lens is 55-200 vr or an 70-300 G. Your next step would be 80-200 f 2.8 or 70-300 VR.
