For film, a used F100 or N90x would be the cheapest good camera. For digital look for a used D50... If you are dedicated to getting it cheap then don't get a new camera... they don't hold their value very well and you can get decent results with the right used equipment when you starting out. DO NOT get a new D40, D40x or D60... they aren't much more advanced than a D50 and are in fact less advanced in some areas not to mention they are not as compatible with existing Nikon lenses as the D50. are we talking film or digital?

In particular, this one: I have the predeccsor and it had to be the best digital camera i have used and for a reasonable price. Pictures are crystal clear and zoom is brilliant. This one is also very similar and slightly cheaper buy about £100: If you can afford the 1st one, then get one, one of the best camera's on the market for less that £200!!! Both are simple to operate and not to bulky!!! Personally, i would recommend the fujifilm series. In particular, this one:
