are we talking film or digital?

For film, a used F100 or N90x would be the cheapest good camera.

For digital look for a used D50...

If you are dedicated to getting it cheap then don't get a new camera... they don't hold their value very well and you can get decent results with the right used equipment when you starting out.

DO NOT get a new D40, D40x or D60... they aren't much more advanced than a D50 and are in fact less advanced in some areas not to mention they are not as compatible with existing Nikon lenses as the D50.

Personally, i would recommend the fujifilm series. In particular, this one:

I have the predeccsor and it had to be the best digital camera i have used and for a reasonable price. Pictures are crystal clear and zoom is brilliant.

This one is also very similar and slightly cheaper buy about £100:

If you can afford the 1st one, then get one, one of the best camera's on the market for less that £200!!!

Both are simple to operate and not to bulky!!!
