I got the D40x for my birthday, it was a great camera, but I took it back and paid the difference and upgraded to the D80 and was so glad I did. I recommend the D80 over the D40 AND THE D40X.

Nikons are almost always going to be the better quality for the money. There are A LOT of benefits to going with a Nikon. Just search for comparisons on Google.

The material quality of Nikon is much higher than Canon, even at the same price level, not sure about the quality of the actual pictures though. Nikon have an incredible amount of features, many of which aren't even available on any Canon cameras. It makes the Nikon manual modes a little more overwhelming to get in to.
But the Canon plastic/aluminum feels so crappy compared to the Nikon titanium. You really get what you pay for.

it would be great if they just made and concentraded all the time and resources on making one superior product instead of different quality products. WHy don't manafactures just produce the best of everything? that way money would be saved and materials too and it would save costs on less resources. Why is their so muhc crap on the market? If the crap was eliminated you could use the the resources used on the crap rubbihs products to make good products. why can't everything just be the best

Good question. I'm having trouble choosing my first model between Canon and Nikon. I need a camera and lense that will be good at shooting indoor live concerts. Any suggestions?
