The default camera of choice until you can get 20mp+. If you are patient you mau find a bargain at Amazon. Avoid eBay as they often go for more than price at Argos!
IR remote only works at front of camera (Unless I’ve missed something) which is a fault. Perhaps a little reflector? Anyone found a way?

SLR = Single Lens Reflex. There’s a mirror between the image sensor and lens.

When you look through the viewfinder the mirror is flipped down and lets you see though the lens your shooting with. What you have framed in the viewfinder is exactly what you’ll have in your final photo.

When you go to take the picture, the mirror flips up out of the way of the image sensor so that it can take the picture. Once it is done it flips down so you can see again. This all happens in a slit second.

just recently bought this camera (the d40) and it’s a great little camera.

Wow, this was super, super helpful! I’m looking into buying a new digital camera (the one I have now is some generic brand and is a piece of crap). This one, so far, is at the top of my list. I’m very thankful that you made this video so I don’t go shelling out $500 for something I don’t know much about.
But there is one thing: what is an SLR? What does it mean and what does it stand for?

    Ofcourse.

Its a modern DSLR — which all offer manual shutter speed control.

  15. Cadrin92on 23 Aug 2009 at 11:31 pm

hi can you change the shutter speed on the d40?

  16. cameralabson 25 Aug 2009 at 11:05 pm

It’s a great camera for beginners, but check out the best buys section at cameralabs . com for all the ones I’d recommend right now!

so this is still a good camera for begginers thinking of buying one ;)

  18. ozzie147on 28 Aug 2009 at 1:30 pm

can anyone recomend me a cheap fisheye for the nikon d40?

  19. asepiwan1on 31 Aug 2009 at 8:48 pm

Yes you can, but you won’t have autofocus, manual only. I sold my 70-300 cos it doesnot have a motor for auto focusing. D40 doesnot have motor on it’s body, so your lens must have it. Great camera.

I am an AS photography student and have had this camera for about 4 months now. Personally, and bearing in mind I am quite new to ‘good’ cameras, I think itit wonderful. My pictures come out really clear and it is very easy to use. I frequently use manual and it is alot easier than using non-digital cameras as you can see what the image looks like then change the aperture…
I would reccomend this to anyone who is looking for a good digital camera :)

The camera needs to have lenses called zoom lenses for the zooming. There isn’t any optical or digital zoom. This is the same for every dslrs.

This video answered all of my questions about this camera. I am a complete beginner with photography, with only experience with a small point and shoot camera. I’m glad you mentioned the bit about it only being 6.1mp as that was something I was curious about as well as the lenses. I know what camera to buy now. Thanks

I have owned the d40 for a couple of months now and I have to say it’s a great piece of kit. It’s tiny and light, but still really solid and satisfying to use.. I would recommend it to absolutely everyone, not just beginners, because of its remarkable picture quality and ideal size.
