Canon 55-250mm lens, would this be acceptable for wedding photography?
Whit asked:
I am looking on the cheaper side, and know almost nothing about f stops and what not. So for a cheaper lens, would everything else be acceptable for wedding photography, or should I be looking for something else? Here is the review I found http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-55-250mm-f-4-5.6-IS-Lens-Review.aspx
It is an outdoor wedding, during the afternoon.
We want to know what you think!

As long as you also have the 18-55 mm lens … they would be a great combination
No. This is not a very good lens for wedding photography. Since weddings often tend to have dark lighting (at the reception, sometimes at the ceremony, if indoors) you need a lens with a low F-number, and F/4 is a little bit high. Unfortunately, lenses with low f-number are also the most expensive. However, you can save a little bit of money if you avoid zooms and purchase primes instead. A favorite of mine is the 50mm f/1.4, which is MUCH sharper than that zoom, AND is very very good in low light. You can find it for $325 at Amazon.
If you are planning on getting into wedding photography and accepting a couple’s trust in you that you are going to produce good photos of one of the most important days in their lives, I strongly recommend that you study up a bit on photography first and also build up your gear before getting into the business.
Any serious wedding photographer shoots with a Canon EOS 5D (or equivalent Nikon) and fast lenses (2.8 or lower).
no its to slow and not wide enough, you should be looking for a professional wedding photographer

For an outdoor wedding it might be ok…but it IS a budget lens, so don’t expect exceptional image quality. It will definitely not be ok for lower light. And, don’t discount a shorter length prime lens (this will have better image quality anyway). I own the EF 85mm f/1.8 and it’s super sharp. The EF 50mm f/1.8 is ultra cheap, but also has sharp image quality. These lenses make good portrait and low light lenses. For group shots you will want a wide angle lens.
I hope you’re not THE wedding photographer, are you?
That’s a good website you have linked. Don’t forget to check out the wedding lens recommendations page…
Since you are going to be hand-holding shots get one with Image Stabilization and don’t go cheap or most of your pics will look amaturish.
And don’t buy it at any of these rip-off scam sites that are owned by George Sabato:

HI Whit,
Well, since you are looking for affordable…. and who isn’t?…. there may be a better choice for you. You have been advised to also have the 18-55mm which makes you having to buy two lenses instead of one, and that might not be a possibility for you at this time. What I would suggest for you, is to look for a 28-200mm which covers semi-wide angle shots… like family, brides maids, friends groups or closer shots when you need them. There may also be an 18-200mm on the market. You can look for other lens manufacture choices as well… as Tamron or Sigma (which are very nice and affordable).
So that is my suggestion. You will have shots requiring wide angle perspectives for this wedding so to avoid having to buy two lenses, opt for one longer focusing zoom which you can also use for just about any shooting situation.
Thank you for reading.
